I spent some of the weekend making my son a beanbag. He's been asking for one for ages! It's a really simple "pattern" - you just make a humbug shape by starting with a piece of fabric twice as wide as it is long and making a tube and sewing the top and bottom at right angles to each other (so at one end seam the centre seam is in the centre and at the other it is at one of the corners. The fabric I got was 114" (yes, inches, not cm!!) wide so it made a nice big beanbag, it took 3 bags of polystyrene beads to stuff. I made a lining out of cotton jersey so the outer layer can be taken off and washed (it has a chunky zip in the centre seam). The most tome consuming part was probably filling it with the beans!
The fabric is great, it is a print of maps of London. Where I work is on there, although the pattern repeat suggests that Maida Vale is just off Old Street roundabout so I wouldn't recommend it for navigating the metropolis!
By popular request - I have made a mini tutorial on making the humbug shape. It's one of those things that's obvious when you show it, but kind of hard to explain! Have a look at this post.
This is fab! I wonder if you can find that fabric in Canada? Your son looks very pleased with the whole affair!
ReplyDeleteI've seen the fabric from a few places so I should think you can get it in Canada.
DeleteIt is his favourite place to sprawl out and read!
This is terrific, I've been wanting to make something like this for my 2 boys! I made one kid's chair 5 years, which I've named "folly" (it's here, http://escapadesinsewing.blogspot.ca/2009/06/folly.html) NEVER again will I make that chair!!! Your's looks fab, and your son looks exceedingly pleased! Great fabric.
ReplyDelete"Folly" looks great but rather complicated! This beanbag is simple enough that I won't mind when he inevitably puts a hole in it!
